Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, dressée, à tiges poilues, ramifiées dès la base.
Feuilles alternes, composées trifoliées, pétiolées, à folioles poilues, ovales, échancrées en cœur, denticulées au sommet. Stipules membraneuses, larges, ovales, dentées, veinées, à nervures saillantes vert vif, soudées au pétiole.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, roses, blanches, pourpres ou jaunâtres, de 8 à 12 mm de long, réunies en bouquets solitaires, sphériques à ovoïdes, de 15 à 25 mm de diamètre. Corolle papilionacée. Calice de même longueur ou plus long que la corolle, velu, à dents fines et étalées, rayonnantes, souvent rougeâtres. Dents du calice s’accroissant après la floraison et se disposant en étoile. 9 étamines soudées entre elles et 1 libre. Ovaire supère.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, erect. Stems hairy, branched from the base.
Leaves alternate, compound trifoliate, petiolate, with hairy, ovate leaflets, indented in a heart, denticulate at the top. Stipules membranous, wide, ovate, toothed, veined, with a protruding bright green vein, fused with the petiole.
Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, pink, white, purple or yellowish, from 8 to 12 mm long, joined together in solitary, spherical to ovoid clusters, from 15 to 25 mm in diameter. Corolla papilionaceous. Calyx as long as or longer than the corolla, very hairy, with thin and spread out teeth, spreading from the centre, often reddish. Teeth of the calyx increasing after flowering and being laid out like a star. 9 stamens fused with each other and 1 free. Ovary superior.

Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C., en référence aux feuilles
à trois folioles caractéristiques.
Stellatum : emprunt du latin stellatus, -a, -um (adj.) [ < stella, -ae (nom)
= l’étoile ] = étoilé, en forme d’étoile, en référence à la forme du fruit.
Trifolium : borrowed from Latin trifolium, -i (noun) [ < tres (adj) = three
+ folium, -i (noun) = leaf ] = clover, name given to the plant by Plinius,
Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, referring to the leaves with three
characteristic leaflets.
Stellatum : borrowed from Latin stellatus, -a, -um (adj)
