Arbre hermaphrodite, à croissance rapide, à écorce lisse, blanc terne.

Feuilles alternes, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, de 15 à 20 cm de long, entières, glabres.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, réunies par 5 à 10 en bouquets ombelliformes pédonculés. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, capsules s’ouvrant par des valves saillant au-delà du bord supérieur.

Tree hermaphrodite, with a fast growth. Bark smooth, dull white.

Eucalyptus : mot formé par le botaniste français Charles-Louis L'Héritier

(1746-1800) [ < εὖ (adv.) = bien + καλυπτός, -ή, -όν (adj.) = couvert,

enveloppé ] = bien enveloppé, en référence aux sépales soudés qui

enveloppent complètement l’ovaire.

Camaldulensis : emprunt du latin médiéval camaldulensis, -is, -e (adj.)

[ < Camaldoli (nom propre) = nom d’une colline près de Naples où se

trouvait un ermitage de l'ordre des Bénédictins ]. Nom donné à la

plante par Friedrich Dehnardt (1787-1870), responsable du jardin

botanique de Naples et auteur du “Catalogus plantarum horti

camaldulensis ”.

Eucalyptus : name formed by the French botanist Charles-Louis L'Héritier

(1746-1800) [ < εὖ (adv) = well + καλυπτός, -ή, -όν (adj) = covered,

wrapped ] = well wrapped, referring to the fused sepals which wrap

the ovary completely.

Camaldulensis : borrowed from medieval Latin camaldulensis, -is, -e

(adj) [ < Camaldoli (proper noun) = name of a hill close to Naples

where there was a hermitage of the Benedictine Order ]. Name given

to the plant by Friedrich Dehnardt (1787-1870), in charge of the

Botanical Garden of Naples and author of “Catalogus plantarum horti

camaldulensis ”.
