Plante à souche ligneuse, hermaphrodite, à tiges florifères dressées, raides, robustes, de 20 à 35 mm de diamètre, cannelées dans leur longueur.

Feuilles alternes, divisées pennatifides à pennatiséquées, vertes au-dessus et devenant presque glabres à leur plein développement, blanchâtres en dessous et à poils arachnéens.

Fleurs bleues ou bleu violacé, réunies en capitules de plus de 60 mm de diamètre. Bractées de l’involucre avec ou sans épine terminale. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes plumeux, glabres, à aigrette blanche beaucoup plus longue que le reste du fruit.

Plant with a woody stock, hermaphrodite. Floriferous stems erect, stiff, robust, from 20 to 35 mm in diameter, longitudinally grooved.

Leaves alternate, dissected pinnatifid to pinnatisect, green above and becoming almost glabrous at their full development, whitish below and with arachnoid hairs.

Flowers blue or purplished blue, joined together in capitula of more than 60 mm in diameter. Bracts of the involucre with or without a terminal thorn. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, feathery, glabrous achenes, with a white pappus much longer than the rest of the fruit.

Cynara : emprunt du grec ancien κύων, κυνός (nom) = le chien,

en référence aux bractées de l’involucre qui ressemblent à des

dents de chien.

Scolymus : emprunt du latin scolymos, -i (nom), nom donné à une sorte

de chardon par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,

forme latinisée du grec ancien σκόλυμος, -ου (nom) = l’artichaut.

Cynara : borrowed from Classical Greek κύων, κυνός (noun) = dog,

referring to the bracts of involucre that look like dogs' teeth.

Scolymus : borrowed from Latin scolymos, -i (noun), name given to

a kind of thistle by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized

form of the Classical Greek σκόλυμος, -ου (noun) = artichoke.
