Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à souche ligneuse, à tiges étalées, glabres, ramifiées, souvent ligneuses à la base.

Feuilles alternes, composées imparipennées ou composées bipennées, à segments fins de 50 mm de long au plus, quadrangulaires à presque cylindriques, charnus, non dentés, à base membraneuse engainant la tige. L’ensemble évoque les bois d’un cerf.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, vert jaunâtre, groupées en denses ombelles composées de 3 à 6 cm de diamètre et à 8 à 36 rayons. Bractées de l’involucre et de l’involucelle linéaires à lancéolées. Sépales minuscules. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes oblongs, de 5 à 6 mm de long, jaunâtres à pourprés, à épaisses côtes proéminentes.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, with a woody stock. Stems spread out, glabrous, branched, often woody at the base.

Leaves alternate, compound imparipinnate or bipinnately, with thin segments of 50 mm long at most, quadrangular to almost cylindrical, fleshy, not toothed, with a membranous base sheathing the stem. The whole evokes the antlers of a deer.

Flowers radially symmetrical, yellowish green, grouped in dense compound umbels from 3 to 6 cm in diameter and with 8 to 36 rays. Bracts of the involucre and of the involucel linear to lanceolate. Sepals tiny. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, oblong achenes, from 5 to 6 mm long, yellowish to purple, with thick prominent ribs.

referring to the shape of the fruits that look like grains of barley.

Maritimum : borrowed from Latin maritimus, -a, -um (adj)

or from the sea-coasts.
