Plante entièrement ligneuse, vivace ou annuelle, à tiges très ramifiées, poilues. Plante originaire du Mexique.

Feuilles opposées ou groupées, simples, ovales à elliptiques, vert brillant, poilues.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches, de 1 à 1,5 cm de diamètre, souvent solitaires, parfois par 2 à l’aisselle des feuilles. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés à la base, à tube court. Calice à 5 sépales soudés. 5 étamines soudées au tube de la corolle. 1 style et 1 stigmate. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, baies (piments / poivrons) pointues, dressées, verts, jaunes, rouges ou orange, de 2 à 15 cm de long, contenant plusieurs graines.

Leaves opposite or grouped, simple, ovate to elliptical, bright green, hairy.

Flowers radially symmetrical, white, from 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, often solitary, sometimes by 2 at the axil of the leaves. Corolla with 5 partly fused petals, with a short tube. Calyx with 5 fused sepals. 5 stamens fused with the tube of the corolla. 1 style and 1 stigma. Ovary superior.

Fruits, pointed berries (peppers / sweet peppers), erect, green, yellow, red or orange, from 2 to 15 cm long, containing several seeds.

[ < κάπτω (verbe) = ouvrir la bouche en grand ] = la bouche grande

ouverte, en référence à la saveur brûlante du poivron.

Annuum : emprunt du latin annuus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < annus, -i (nom) = l’année ] = qui dure un an, qui revient chaque

année.

Capsicum : borrowed from Classical Greek κάψις, -εως (noun)

[ < κάπτω (verb) = to open the mouth widely] = wide-open mouth,

referring to the fiery flavour of pepper.

Annuum : borrowed from Latin annuus, -a, -um (adj)

[ < annus, -i (noun) = year ] = that lasts a year, that recurs every year.
