Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, rampante ou grimpante, à tiges anguleuses, rameuses, nettement plus poilues vers le sommet.
Feuilles alternes, composées paripennées, à 10 à 18 folioles de 10 à 25 mm de long, elliptiques à linéaires, terminées par une vrille ramifiée et spiralée. Stipules dentées ou non.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, pourpre rougeâtre sombre, à sommet presque noir, de 10 à 18 mm de long, pendantes, réunies par 2 à 12 en grappes portées par un pédoncule plus long que la feuille sous-jacente. Corolle papilionacée. Calice poilu à 5 dents inégales. Style plié et tordu sur lui-même. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, gousses droites, poilues, brunes, de 25 à 40 mm de long, à 3 à 5 graines.

Corolla papilionaceous. Calyx hairy with 5 unequal teeth. Style folded and twisted on itself. Ovary superior.
Fruits, straight, hairy, brown pods, from 25 to 40 mm long, with 3 to 5 seeds.

Vicia : emprunt du latin vicia, -ae (nom) = la vesce, nom donné à
la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C., forme
latinisée du grec ancien βικία, -ας (nom) = la vesce.
Benghalensis : emprunt du latin médiéval benghalensis, -is, -e (adj.)
= du Bengale, région du sous-continent indien divisée entre l'Inde et
le Bangladesh.
Vicia : borrowed from Latin vicia, -ae (noun) = vetch, name given to
the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized form of
the Classical Greek βικία, -ας (noun) = vetch.
Benghalensis : borrowed from medieval Latin benghalensis, -is, -e (adj)
= of or from Bengal, area of the Indian subcontinent divided between
India and Bangladesh.
