Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, un peu charnue, étalée, à poils rudes, à tiges simples, quadrangulaires, à aiguillons nombreux et droits, très fragiles.
Feuilles verticillées par 4, simples, oblongues à obovales, un peu pointue au sommet, de 6 à 10 mm de long, poilues, à limbe bordé de petits aiguillons, à 1 nervure.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, jaunâtre clair à verdâtres, de 1,5 à 2 mm de diamètre, groupées par 3 à l’aisselle des feuilles: l’une, centrale, stamino-pistillée, à corolle à 4 pétales soudés à la base et à 4 étamines; les 2 autres, latérales, staminées, à corolle à 3 pétales soudés à la base et à 3 étamines. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, capsules hérissées de soies blanches, formées par l’ensemble des 3 fleurs dont les pédoncules se sont soudés, présentant 3 cornes recourbées, fortement bordées de poils crochus, sans corne dorsale. Graines hémisphériques, densément hispides.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, a little fleshy, spreading, with hard hairs. Stems unbranced, quadrangular, with numerous and straight prickles, very fragile.
Leaves whorled by 4, simple, oblong to obovate, a little pointed at the top, from 6 to 10 mm long, hairy, with blade bordered by small prickles, with 1 vein.
Flowers radially symmetrical, pale yellowish to greenish, from 1.5 à 2 mm in diameter, joined together by 3 at the axil of the leaves: one, central, stamino-pistillate, with a corolla with 4 partly fused petals and 4 stamens; 2 others, lateral, staminate, with a corolla with 3 partly fused petals and 3 stamens. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, capsules covered in white bristles, formed by all 3 flowers whose peduncles are fused, presenting 3 curved horns, strongly bordered by prickles, without dorsal horn. Seeds hemispherical, densely hispid.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Valantia : nom donné en l’honneur de Sébastien Vaillant (1669-1722),
chirurgien et botaniste français, directeur des Jardins de Louis XIV.
Hispida : emprunt du latin hispidus, -a, -um (adj.) = hérissé, velu, rude,
en référence aux tiges et aux fruits à aiguillons nombreux et droits.
Valantia : name given in honour of Sébastien Vaillant (1669-1722),
French surgeon and botanist, director of the Gardens of Louis XIV.
Hispida : borrowed from Latin hispidus, -a, -um (adj) = bristle, very hairy,
hard, referring to stems and fruits with numerous and straight prickles.
