Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, laineuse, à souche parfois ligneuse, à tiges velues, à poils ébouriffés.
Feuilles opposées, simples, oblongues à ovales, dentées, sessiles. Bractées similaires.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaunes à pointes noires, de 7 à 10 mm de long, réunies en verticilles espacés. Corolle à 2 lèvres égalant le calice. Calice à 5 sépales terminés en épine. 4 étamines courtes, renfermées dans le tube de la corolle. 1 style renfermé dans le tube de la corolle et terminé par 1 stigmate bifide. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, 4 akènes.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, woolly, with sometimes a woody stock. Stems very hairy, with dishevelled hairs.
Leaves opposite, simple, oblong to ovate, toothed, sessile. Bracts similar.
Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, yellow with black points, from 7 to 10 mm long, joined together in spaced whorls. Corolla with 2 lips equalling the calyx. Calyx with 5 sepals finished by a thorn. 4 short stamens contained in the tube of the corolla. 1 style contained in the tube of the corolla and finished by 1 bifid stigma. Ovary superior.
Fruits, 4 achenes.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Sideritis : emprunt du grec ancien σιδηρῖτις, -ίτιδος (adj./nom)
[ < σίδηρος, -ου (nom) = le fer, la pointe de flèche ] = de fer, mêlé de
fer, la crapaudine, nom donné à la plante par Dioscoride, médecin et
botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence à la capacité
supposée de la plante de cicatriser les blessures causées par des
épées.
Lanata : emprunt du latin lanatus, -a, -um (adj.)
[ < lana, -ae (nom) = la laine ] = laineux, couvert de laine,
en référence aux poils laineux qui recouvrent la plante.
Sideritis : borrowed from Classical Greek σιδηρῖτις, -ίτιδος (adj/noun)
[ < σίδηρος, -ου (noun) = iron, arrowhead ] = of iron, mixed with iron,
ironwort, name given to the plant by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and
botanist died in 90 AD, referring to the plant's supposed ability to heal
wounds from swords.
Lanata : borrowed from Latin lanatus, -a, -um (adj)
[ < lana, -ae (noun) = wool ] = wooly, covered with wool,
referring to the woolly hairs which cover the plant.
