Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, vivace, à tige glabre, à 2 tubercules entiers.
Feuilles alternes, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, en gouttière, glabres, souvent courbées vers le haut, à gaine basale verte et souvent tachée de rouge ou de pourpre. Bractées généralement plus courtes que le casque, teintées de rouge pâle ou de pourpre.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, de 15 à 20 mm de long au plus, réunies par 3 à 10 en épi lâche, à pétales et sépales rouge brunâtre à rouge violacé, rarement verdâtres ou blanchâtres. Labelle de 13 à 18 mm de long, rouge sombre à rouge brunâtre, avec deux lamelles basales noir pourpré, à lobe médian étroit de 10 à 12 mm de long sur 3 à 5 mm de large, triangulaire à lancéolé, plié vers l’arrière presque jusqu’à l’ovaire. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, capsules coriaces et membraneuses.

Leaves alternate, simple, linear to lanceolate, in gutter, glabrous, often curved to the top, with a basal sheath green and often speckled of red or purple. Bracts generally shorter than the helmet, tinted of pale red or purple.
Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, from 15 to 20 mm long at most, joined together by 3 to 10 in a loose spike, with petals and sepals brownish red to purplish red, seldom greenish or whitish. Labellum from 13 to 18 mm long, dark red to brownish red, with two basal lamellas purplish black, with a median lobe narrow, from 10 to 12 mm long and from 3 to 5 mm across, triangular to lanceolate, folded towards the back almost reaching the ovary. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, tough and membranous capsules.
