Arbuste hermaphrodite, à tiges cylindriques, ramifiées, poilues, de 15 à 20 mm de diamètre. Plante originaire d’Asie et d’Amérique centrale.

Feuilles alternes, divisées palmatiséquées, persistantes, vert brillant ou panachées de jaune, glabres, à pétiole de 15 à 25 cm de long, à 8 à 10 segments pétiolés de 5 à 13 cm de long et de 2 à 6 cm de large.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, jaunâtres, de 6 à 7 mm de diamètre, portées par des pédoncules à courts poils étoilés, réunies en panicules de 15 à 20 cm de long. Corolle à 5 (parfois 6) pétales libres, unis. Calice à 5 sépales soudés en bourrelet verdâtre. 5 étamines à filet verdâtre et à anthère jaune pâle. 1 style. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, drupes glabres, de 6 à 8 mm de diamètre, en forme de sphère tronquée à sommet aplati, d’abord vert jaunâtre, puis orange, puis rouges, et enfin couleur prune foncé à maturité.

Leaves alternate, dissected palmatisect, persistent, green shining or yellow variegated, glabrous, with petiole from 15 to 25 cm long, with 8 to 10 petiolate segments from 5 to 13 cm long and from 2 to 6 cm across.

Flowers radially symmetrical, yellowish, from 6 to 7 mm in diameter, carried by peduncles with short stellate hairs, joined together in panicles from 15 to 20 cm long. Corolla with 5 (sometimes 6) free, self-coloured petals. Calyx with 5 sepals fused in greenish fold. 5 stamens with greenish filament and pale yellow anther. 1 style. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, glabrous drupes, from 6 to 8 mm in diameter, in the shape of a truncate sphere with flattened top, initially yellowish green, then orange, then red, and finally dark plum color at maturity.
