Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges ramifiées, poilues, sécrétant un latex quand on les coupe.

Feuilles alternes, divisées pennatiséquées, de 20 cm de long au plus, à segments linéaires à lancéolés, dentés, poilus et bien espacés.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, roses, solitaires, de 35 à 60 mm de diamètre, généralement sans centre noir, sur un long pédoncule à poils appliqués. Corolle à 4 pétales libres. Étamines nombreuses, libres entre elles, à filet étroit et rougeâtre, à anthère bleuâtre ou violacée. Style à 7 à 12 stigmates rayonnants sur un disque. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules de 15 à 20 mm de long, oblongues, étroites, glabres, à sommet en disque aplati à 6 à 9 rayons.

Leaves alternate, dissected pinnatisect, 20 cm long at most, with segments linear to lanceolate, toothed, hairy and well spaced.

Flowers radially symmetrical, pink, solitary, from 35 to 60 mm in diameter, generally without a black centre, on a long peduncle with appressed hairs. Corolla with 4 free petals. Stamens numerous, free between them, with a narrow and reddish filament, with a bluish or purplish anther. Style with 7 to 12 stigmas spreading from the centre on a disc. Ovary superior.

Fruits, oblong, narrow, glabrous capsules, from 15 to 20 mm long, with the top in the shape of a flattened disc with 6 to 9 rays.

name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD.
