Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à bulbe formé d’écailles épaisses.

Feuilles en rosette à la base, simples, linéaires, entières, de 5 mm de large au plus, glabres, en gouttière, à ligne médiane blanche dessus. Bractées allongées, aiguës, bien plus courtes que les pédicelles.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches, de 25 à 40 mm de diamètre, portées par un long pédicelle, réunies par 8 à 20 en corymbes de 5 à 10 cm de diamètre, s’allongeant à la fructification. Périanthe à 6 tépales pétaloïdes, libres, étalés, de 15 à 22 mm de long, à large bande verte au revers. 6 étamines à anthère blanc jaunâtre. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules ovales, à 6 côtes séparées par des sillons égaux.

Leaves in a rosette at the base, simple, linear, entire, 5 mm across at most, glabrous, in gutter, with a white median line above. Bracts lengthened, acute, much shorter than the pedicels.

Flowers radially symmetrical, white, from 25 to 40 mm in diameter, carried by a long pedicel, joined together by 8 to 20 in corymbs from 5 to 10 cm in diameter, lengthening at fructification. Perianth with 6 petaloid tepals free, spread out, from 15 to 22 mm long, with a wide green band on the reverse. 6 stamens with a yellowish white anther. Ovary superior.

Fruits, ovate capsules with 6 ribs separated by equal furrows.

[ < ὄρνις, -ιθος (nom) = l’oiseau, la poule + γάλα, -ακτος (nom)

= le lait ] = le lait de poule, nom donné à la plante par Dioscoride,

médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence au

blanc pur de ses fleurs.

Umbellatum : emprunt du latin umbellatus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < umbella, -ae (nom) = l’ombrelle, le parapluie ] = en forme de

parapluie, disposé en ombelle, en référence à la disposition des

fleurs dans l’inflorescence.

Ornithogalum : borrowed from Classical Greek ὀρνιθόγαλον, -ου

(noun) [ < ὄρνις, -ιθος (noun) = bird, hen + γάλα, -ακτος (noun) =

milk ] = hen milk, name given to the plant by Dioscorides, Greek

doctor and botanist died in 90 AD, referring to the pure white flowers.
