Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, glabre, à bulbe ovale avec de nombreux cailleux, de ± 3 cm de long, de ± 2 cm de large.

Feuilles à la base, au nombre de 4 à 6, simples, linéaires à rubanées, entières, glabres, de 5 à 15 mm de large, avec une ligne médiane blanche, un peu molles, égales ou plus longues que la hampe florale.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches à blanc verdâtre, de 30 à 45 mm de diamètre, réunies par 5 à 15 en grappes spiciformes unilatérales, de 20 à 60 cm de long. Bractées florales linéaires, effilées, aussi longues ou plus longues que le pédicelle. Pédicelles réfléchis à la fructification. Périanthe à 6 tépales pétaloïdes, libres, blancs, avec une large ligne verte au dos, de 20 à 30 mm de long. 6 étamines à filet soudé en tube, à anthère blanche. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules ovoïdes, de 16 à 22 mm de long, de 12 à 17 mm de diamètre, vertes, glabres, pendantes.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, glabrous. Bulb oval, with many offsets, approximately 3 cm long, approximately 2 cm across.

Leaves at the base, amounting to 4 to 6, simple, linear to ribboned, entire, glabrous, from 5 to 15 mm across, with a white median line, a little flaccid, as long as or longer than the floral pole.

Flowers radially symmetrical, white to greenish-white, from 30 to 45 mm in diameter, joined together by 5 to 15 in spike-shaped, one-sided racemes, from 20 to 60 cm long. Floral bracts linear, sharp, as long as or longer than the pedicel. Pedicels reflexed at fructification. Perianth with 6 petaloid tepals, free, white, with a wide green line on the back, from 20 to 30 mm long. 6 stamens with filaments fused to form a tube, with a white anther. Ovary superior.

Fruits, ovoid capsules, from 16 to 22 mm long, from 12 to 17 mm in diameter, green, glabrous, hanging.

Ornithogalum : emprunt du grec ancien ὀρνιθόγαλον, -ου (nom)

[ < ὄρνις, -ιθος (nom) = l’oiseau, la poule + γάλα, -ακτος (nom)

= le lait ] = le lait de poule, nom donné à la plante par Dioscoride,

médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence au

blanc pur de ses fleurs.

Nutans : emprunt du latin nuto, -as, -are (verbe) = balancer, pendre,

se pencher, en référence aux fruits pendants.

Ornithogalum : borrowed from Classical Greek ὀρνιθόγαλον, -ου

(noun) [ < ὄρνις, -ιθος (noun) = bird, hen + γάλα, -ακτος (noun) =

milk ] = hen milk, name given to the plant by Dioscorides, Greek

doctor and botanist died in 90 AD, referring to the pure white flowers.

Nutans : borrowed from Latin nuto, -as, -are (verb) = swing, hang,

bent, referring to the hanging fruits.
