Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges dressées, ramifiées vers le sommet, couvertes de poils feutrés, avec des ailes épineuses.
Feuilles à la base et alternes, divisées pennatipartites, de 50 cm de long au plus, étroites, couvertes de poils blanchâtres, épineuses, à segments triangulaires. Feuilles basilaires pétiolées, feuilles caulinaires sessiles, décurrentes.
Fleurs mauves à pourpres, réunies en capitules de 4 à 6 cm de diamètre, globuleux à ovoïdes, plus ou moins groupés. Fleurons tous tubulés, de 30 à 35 mm de long, à 5 lobes profonds. Involucre à plusieurs rangs de bractées vertes et mauves, de 5 à 7 mm de large, épaisses, coriaces, terminées par une pointe épineuse, les externes et les médianes très réfléchies. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, akènes rugueux, cylindriques, de 4 à 6 mm de long, surmontés d’un pappus blanc de 1 cm de long.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems erect, branched towards the top, covered in felted hairs, with spiny wings.
Leaves in a rosette at the base and alternate, dissected pinnatipartite, 50 cm long at most, narrow, covered in whitish hairs, spiny, with triangular segments. Basal leaves petiolate, stem-leaves stalkless, decurrent.
Flowers mauve to purple, joined together in capitula from 4 to 6 cm in diameter, globose to ovoid, more or less grouped. Only disk-florets, from 30 to 35 mm long, with 5 deep lobes. Involucre with several rows of green and mauve bracts from 5 to 7 mm across, thick, tough, finished by a spiny point, the external and median ones very resupinate. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, rough, cylindrical achenes, from 4 to 6 mm long, surmounted by a white pappus 1 cm long.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Onopordum : emprunt du latin onopordon, -i (nom) = le pet d’âne, nom
donné à la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,
forme latinisée du grec ancien ὀνόπορδον, -ου (nom)
[ < ὄνος, -ου (nom) = l’âne + πορδή, -ῆς (nom) = le pet ] = le pet
d’âne, en référence aux effets présumés que la plante procure aux
ânes qui en sont friands.
Illyricum : emprunt du latin illyricus, -a, -um (adj.) = d’Illyrie,
qui provient d’Illyrie (province romaine sur les côtes de la rive
orientale de l'Adriatique).
Onopordum : borrowed from Latin onopordon, -i (noun) = donkey fart,
name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,
Latinized form of the Classical Greek ὀνόπορδον, -ου (noun)
[ < ὄνος, -ου (noun) = donkey + πορδή, -ῆς (noun) = fart ] = donkey
fart, referring to the supposed effects that the plant gives donkeys
which are fond of it.
Illyricum : borrowed from Latin illyricus, -a, -um (adj) = of or from Illyria,
which comes from Illyria (Roman province on the coasts of the east
shore of the Adriatic).
