Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges dressées, de 2 cm de diamètre, ramifiées dans la moitié supérieure, couvertes de poils feutrés, avec des ailes épineuses.
Feuilles à la base et alternes, divisées pennatipartites à pennatiséquées, de 10 à 50 cm de long, de 2 à 20 cm de large, vert grisâtre, celles de la base à plus de 10 paires de lobes, épineuses, velues sur les deux faces.
Fleurs mauves à base blanche, réunies en capitules de 5 à 8 cm de diamètre, globuleux à ovoïdes. Fleurons tous tubulés, de 30 à 40 mm de long, avec des glandes sur les 5 lobes du fleuron. Involucre à plusieurs rangs de bractées vertes et mauves, glabres, épaisses, coriaces, terminées par une pointe épineuse mais sans épines sur les bords, les externes et les médianes très réfléchies. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, akènes plumeux, rugueux.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems erect, 2 cm in diameter, branched in the upper half, covered in felted hairs, with spiny wings.
Leaves at the base and alternate, dissected pinnatipartite to pinnatisect, from 10 to 50 cm long, from 2 to 20 cm across, greyish green, those of the base with more than 10 pairs of lobes, spiny, very hairy on the two faces.
Flowers mauve with a white base, joined together in capitula from 5 to 8 cm in diameter, globose to ovoid. Only disk-florets, from 30 to 40 mm long, with glands on the 5 lobes of the floret. Involucre with several rows of green and mauve bracts, glabrous, thick, tough, finished by a spiny point but without thorns on the edges, the external and median ones very resupinate. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, feathery, rough achenes.

donné à la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,
forme latinisée du grec ancien ὀνόπορδον, -ου (nom)
[ < ὄνος, -ου (nom) = l’âne + πορδή, -ῆς (nom) = le pet ] = le pet
d’âne, en référence aux effets présumés que la plante procure aux
ânes qui en sont friands.
Bracteatum : emprunt du latin bracteatus, -a, -um (adj.)
[ < bractea, -ae (nom) = la mince feuille de métal, la bractée ]
= qui a des bractées.
Onopordum : borrowed from Latin onopordon, -i (noun) = donkey fart,
name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,
Latinized form of the Classical Greek ὀνόπορδον, -ου (noun)
[ < ὄνος, -ου (noun) = donkey + πορδή, -ῆς (noun) = fart ] = donkey
fart, referring to the supposed effects that the plant gives donkeys
which are fond of it.
