Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges étalées à érigées, simples ou ramifiées, à poils blancs étalés et raides, souvent épaissies sous les capitules, cylindriques, de 1 à 2 mm de diamètre.

Feuilles à la base et alternes, simples, obovales à spatulées, poilues, vertes, entières à dentées-crénelées, de 3 à 8 cm de long, de 1 à 3,5 cm de large, les caulinaires très peu nombreuses et sessiles.

Fleurs réunies en capitules solitaires, de 12 à 15 mm de diamètre, au sommet d’un long pédoncule. Fleurons ligulés jaune foncé à orangé, rouges au dos, terminés par 5 petites dents. Involucre couvert de poils blancs, raides, à 2 rangées de bractées, les internes lancéolées, de 10 à 12 mm de long, vertes à bord membraneux jaunâtre, les externes minuscules et à peine visibles.

Fruits, akènes de 5 à 7 mm de long, terminés par un bec et surmontés d’une aigrette avec une rangée extérieure de poils très courts et une rangée intérieure de longs poils plumeux.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems spread out to erect, unbranched or branched, with white, spread out and stiff hairs, often thickened under the capitula, cylindrical, from 1 to 2 mm in diameter.

Leaves at the base and alternate, simple, obovate to spatulate, hairy, green, entire to crenate, from 3 to 8 cm long, from 1 to 3.5 cm across, stem-leaves very few and sessile.

Flowers joined together in solitary capitula, from 12 to 15 mm in diameter, at the top of a long peduncle. Ray-florets deep-yellow to orange, red on the back, finished by 5 little teeth. Involucre covered in white, stiff hairs, with 2 rows of bracts, the inner ones lanceolate, from 10 to 12 mm long, green, with membranous, yellowish edge, the external ones tiny and scarcely conspicuous.

Fruits, achenes from 5 to 7 mm long, finished by a beak and surmounted by a pappus with an outer row of very short hairs and an inner row of very long, feathery hairs.

[ < ὑπο (prép.) = sous + χοῖρος, -ου (nom) = le porc ] = la chicorée,

nom donné à une sorte de chicorée par Théophraste, philosophe

péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste, mort

vers 288 av. J.-C., en référence à la ressemblance des poils de la

plante avec des soies de porc.

Achyrophorus : emprunt du grec ancien ἄχυρον, -ου (nom)

= la paille, le chaume et de φορέω (verbe) = porter, en référence

à la présence de paillettes, d’écailles sur le réceptacle.

Hypochaeris : borrowed from Classical Greek ὑποχοιρίς, -ίδος (noun)

[ < ὑπο (prep) = below + χοῖρος, -ου (noun) = pork ] = chicory, name

given to a kind of chicory by Theophrastus, peripatetic philosopher,

disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist, died towards 288 BC,

referring to the resemblance of the hairs of the plant with pork bristles.

Achyrophorus : borrowed from Classical Greek ἄχυρον, -ου (noun)

= straw, stubble and from φορέω (verb) = carry, referring to the

presence of flakes, of scales on the receptacle.
