Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, sans tiges apparentes.
Feuilles prostrées à la base de la plante, oblongues, divisées pennatipartites à pennatiséquées, de 15 à 40 cm de long, à segments terminés en épine et à pétiole engainant à la base.
Fleurs pourpres, mauves ou rosâtres, réunies en capitules solitaires de 30 à 70 mm de diamètre, à fleurons tous tubulés, subsistant assez longtemps après que les feuilles se sont desséchées. Bractées de l’involucre étalées, foliacées, les médianes à 3 pointes apicales, les internes à une seule épine brune. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, akènes surmontés d’une aigrette de poils blancs.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, without conspicuous stems.
Leaves prostrate at the base of the plant, oblong, dissected pinnatipartite to pinnatisect, from 15 to 40 cm long, with segments finished by a spine and with a petiole sheathing at the base.
Flowers purple, mauve or pinkish, joined together in solitary capitula from 30 to 70 mm in diameter, with only disk-florets, remaining long enough after the leaves are desiccated. Bracts of the involucre spread out, foliaceous, the median ones with 3 apical points, the internal ones with a single brown spine. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, achenes surmounted by a brush of white hairs.

espèce de chardon par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,
forme latinisée du grec ancien ἀτρακτυλίς, -ίδος (nom), nom
donné à une espèce de chardon par Théophraste, philosophe
péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste, mort
vers 288 av. J.-C.
Gummifera : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < gummis, -is (nom)
= la gomme + -fer, -fera, -ferum (suffixe) = qui porte ] = à gomme.
Atractylis : borrowed from Latin atractylis, -idis (noun), name given
to a species of thistle by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,
Latinized form of the Classical Greek ἀτρακτυλίς, -ίδος (noun),
name given to a species of thistle by Theophrastus, peripatetic
philosopher, disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist, died
towards 288 BC.
