Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, épineuse, à tiges grêles, souvent glabres.

Feuilles alternes, simples, linéaires, étroites, dentées, bordées de cils longs et presque épineux.

Fleurs pourpres, réunies en capitules solitaires de 15 mm de diamètre, entourés d’un involucre à bractées extérieures ordinairement purpurines, profondément divisées en épines étroites formant comme une cage délicate. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes surmontés d’une aigrette de poils blancs, une fois et demie à deux fois plus longue que le reste du fruit.

Fruits, achenes surmounted by a brush of white hairs, once and a half to twice longer than the rest of the fruit.

profondément divisées en épines étroites formant comme une cage.
