Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, dressée à étalée, poilue.
Feuilles alternes, composées imparipennées, à 15 à 31 folioles linéaires, oblongues à arrondies, échancrées au sommet, généralement collantes, glanduleuses, plus longues que les grappes de fleurs. Les stipules sont membraneuses et libres entre elles.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, bleues, lilas, blanches ou jaune pâle à pointe bleue, de 4 à 6 mm de long, réunies par 3 à 10 en grappes axillaires serrées, portées par un pédoncule plus court que la feuille sous-jacente. Corolle papilionacée. 9 étamines soudées entre elles et 1 libre. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, gousses de 10 à 40 mm de long et de 5 à 10 mm de large, plates sur une face et gondolées sur l’autre, aux 2 bords dentés en scie, velues ou non.

Leaves alternate, compound imparipinnate, with 15 to 31 linear, oblong to round leaflets, indented at the top, generally sticky, glandulous, longer than the racemes of flowers. Stipules membranous and free between them.
Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, blue, lilac, white or pale yellow with blue point, from 4 to 6 mm long, joined together by 3 to 10 in compact axillary racemes, carried by a peduncle shorter than the underlying leaf. Corolla papilionaceous. 9 stamens fused with each other and 1 free. Ovary superior.
Fruits, pods from 10 to 40 mm long and from 5 to 10 mm across, flat on a face and curling on the other, with 2 edges toothed like a saw, very hairy or not.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Astragalus : emprunt du latin astragalus, -i (nom) = l’astragale, nom
donné au pois chiche par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,
forme latinisée du grec ancien ἀστράγαλος, -ου (nom) = la vertèbre,
l’osselet, nom donné à la plante par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste
grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence à la forme des graines
semblables à des osselets.
Pelecinus : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < πέλεκυς, -εως (nom)
= la hache à deux tranchants, la double hache; cf. πελεκινωτός, -ή,
-όν (adj.) = taillé en forme de hache ] = en forme de double hache,
peut-être en référence au fruit en forme de scie à double tranchant.
Astragalus : borrowed from Latin astragalus, -i (noun) = astragalus,
name given to chick-pea by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,
Latinized form of the Classical Greek ἀστράγαλος, -ου (noun)
= vertebra, ossicle, name given to the plant by Dioscorides,
Greek doctor and botanist died in 90 AD, referring to the shape of
seeds similar to ossicles.
Pelecinus : adjective created by botanists [ < πέλεκυς, -εως (noun)
= double axe; cf. πελεκινωτός, -ή, -όν (adj) = cut in the shape
of double axe ] = axe-shaped, perhaps referring to the fruit which
looks like a two-edged saw.
