Plante herbacée, monoïque, vivace, à tubercule vertical, dégageant une odeur fétide à la floraison.
Feuilles à la base, simples, cordiformes à sagittées, entières, de 20 à 35 cm de long, à dessus brillant, portées par un pétiole plus long que le limbe.
Fleurs sans périanthe, les mâles au-dessus des femelles, groupées en épi autour d’un spadice charnu, pourpre foncé, terminé par un appendice cylindrique ou en forme de massue. Spathe de 20 à 30 cm de long, verdâtre à l’extérieur, pourpre au bas de la face interne, virant progressivement au jaune verdâtre plus haut, tout éclaboussée de grandes taches pourpres, à limbe jamais replié vers l’arrière. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, baies rouge vif à maturité, en épi allongé après la flétrissure des feuilles.

Plant herbaceous, monoecious, perennial, with a vertical tuber, stinky at flowering.
Leaves at the base, simple, cordate to sagittate, entire, from 20 to 35 cm long, with a shiny top, carried by a petiole longer than the blade.
Flowers without a perianth, the males ones above the females ones, grouped in spike around a dark purple, fleshy spadix finished by a cylindrical or bludgeon-shaped appendix. Spatha from 20 to 30 cm long, greenish outside, purple at the bottom of the internal face, becoming gradually greenish yellow higher, all splashed with large purple specks, with the limb never folded up backwards. Ovary superior.
Fruits, berries bright red at maturity, in a lengthened spike after the fading of the leaves.

Théophraste, philosophe péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote, botaniste
et naturaliste, mort vers 288 av. J.-C.
Dioscoridis : nom donné en l’honneur de Dioscoride [ < Dioscorides, -is ],
médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C.
Arum : borrowed from Latin aron, -i (arum, -i) (noun), name
given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized
form of the Classical Greek ἄρον, -ου (noun), name given to the
plant by Theophrastus, peripatetic philosopher, disciple of Aristotle,
botanist and naturalist, died towards 288 BC.
Dioscoridis : name given in honour of Dioscorides [ < Dioscorides, -is ],
Greek doctor and botanist died in 90 AD.
