Plante herbacée, monoïque, vivace, érigée, à tubercules globuleux, croissant dans des endroits frais, à l’ombre, dégageant une odeur agréable à la floraison.

Feuilles à la base, embrassantes, apparaissant en automne, simples, sagittées, entières, vert foncé brillant, à bords ondulés, longuement pétiolées, de 15 à 30 cm de long, de 10 à 17 cm de large.

Fleurs sans périanthe, les mâles au-dessus des femelles, groupées en épi autour d’un spadice cylindrique charnu, jaune orangé, saillant, de 15 à plus de 25 cm de long. Spathe blanc crème à vert jaunâtre pâle, unie, à tube renflé, à limbe étroit souvent replié vers l’arrière, enroulée, fermée sur la moitié de sa longueur. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, baies rouge vif à maturité, de 5 à 11 mm de long, de 8 à 13 mm de diamètre, réunies en épi allongé de 10 à 11 cm de long, de 4 à 5 cm de large, après la flétrissure des feuilles.

Plant herbaceous, monoecious, perennial, erect, with globular tubers, growing in damp and shaded places, releasing a pleasant smell at flowering.

Leaves at the base, clasping, appearing in autumn, simple, sagittate, entire, dark bright green, with wavy edges, lengthily petiolate, from 15 to 30 cm long, 10 to 17 cm across.

Flowers without a perianth, the male ones above females, joined together in spike around a cylindrical, fleshy, orange yellow, protruding spadix, from 15 to more than 25 cm long. Spathe cream-coloured white to pale yellowish green, self-coloured, with a swollen tube, with a narrow limb often folded up backwards, coiled, closed on half its length. Ovary superior.

Fruits, berries bright red at maturity, from 5 to 11 mm long, from 8 to 13 mm in diameter, joined together in a lengthened spike from 10 to 11 cm long, from 4 to 5 cm across after the fading of the leaves.
