Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, poussant dans des endroits secs et ensoleillés, à tiges érigées, souvent couvertes de poils.
Feuilles opposées, divisées pennatiséquées, la plupart radicales, de 30 à 60 cm de long, glabres ou poilues, pétiolées, avec une nervure blanche dessous, à lobes étroits, rigides, terminés par une épine acérée blanchâtre.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, blanches, veinées de pourpre, de 35 à 50 mm de long, insérées à l’aisselle de grandes bractées ovales, dentées, épineuses et disposées en longs épis cylindriques. Lèvre unique, trilobée, surmontée par la lèvre supérieure en casque du calice. Calice glabre, bilabié, à 4 sépales inégaux. 4 étamines non saillantes, dont 2 plus petites. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules à quelques graines de grande taille.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, growing in dry and sunny places. Stems erect, often covered in hairs.
Leaves opposite, dissected pinnatisect, mainly radical, from 30 to 60 cm long, glabrous or hairy, petiolate, with a white vein below, with narrow and rigid lobes finished by a whitish sharp-edged thorn.
Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, white, with purple veins, from 35 to 50 mm long, inserted at the axil of large, ovate, toothed, spiny bracts and laid out in long cylindrical spikes. Lip single, three-lobed, surmounted by the upper helmet-shaped lip of the calyx. Calyx glabrous, two-lipped, with 4 unequal sepals. 4 nonprotruding stamens including 2 smaller. Ovary superior.
Fruits, capsules with some seeds of big size.

Acanthus : emprunt du grec ancien ἄκανθα, -ης (nom) = l’épine,
le piquant, en référence aux feuilles épineuses de l’Acanthus
spinosus.
Spinosus : emprunt du latin spinosus, -a, -um (adj.) [ < spina, -ae
(nom) = l’épine ] = pointu, épineux, couvert d’épines, en référence aux
parties épineuses de la plante.
Acanthus : borrowed from Classical Greek ἄκανθα, -ης (noun) = thorn,
spine, referring to the spiny leaves of Acanthus spinosus.
Spinosus : borrowed from Latin spinosus, -a, -um (adj) [ < spina, -ae
(noun) = spine ] = sharp, spiny, covered in thorns, referring to the
spiny parts of the plant.
