Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, très épineuse, dressée, à poils arachnéens blanchâtres, à tiges très ramifiées, à ailes étroites et un peu épineuses, à rameaux écartés les uns des autres.
Feuilles alternes, simples, lancéolées à oblongues, presque entières, bordées de touffes de longues épines minces et dorées, terminées en pointe acérée. Feuilles se prolongeant le long de la tige pour former des ailes bordées d’épines.
Fleurs roses ou pourpres, réunies en capitules cylindriques de 22 à 35 mm de long, en bouquets entourés des feuilles supérieures. Involucre avec des bractées très étroites, terminées par une épine ramifiée et arquée. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, akènes plumeux, bruns et lisses, à contour ovale et comme comprimé, à aigrette entourée d’un rebord épais et corné.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, very spiny, erect, with whitish arachnoid hairs. Stems very branched, with narrow and a little spiny wings, with branches isolated from each other.
Leaves alternate, simple, lanceolate to oblong, almost entire, bordered by tufts of long thin and gilded thorns, finished in a sharp-edged point. Leaves prolonged along the stem to form wings bordered by thorns.
Flowers pink or purple, joined together in cylindrical capitula from 22 to 35 mm long, in clusters surrounded by the upper leaves. Involucre with very narrow bracts, finished by a branched and curved thorn. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, feathery, brown and smooth achenes, with an ovate contour and like flattened, with a pappus surrounded by a thick and horny edge.

Picnomon : nom créé par les botanistes [ < πυκνός, -ή, -όν (adj.)
= dense, dru, serré + νομός, -ου (nom) = le pâturage ] = qui pousse en
abondance dans les pâturages, qui envahit les pâturages.
Acarna : emprunt du latin acorna, -ae (nom) = nom donné à un chardon
rougeâtre par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C., forme
latinisée du grec ancien ἄκορνα, -ης (nom), nom donné à une sorte de
chardon par Théophraste, philosophe péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote,
botaniste et naturaliste, mort vers 288 av. J.-C.
Picnomon : name created by botanists [ < πυκνός, -ή, -όν (adj)
= dense, thickly, tight + νομός, -ου (noun) = pasture land ] = that
grows in abundance in pastures, that invades pastures.
Acarna : borrowed from Latin acorna, -ae (noun) = name given to
a reddish thistle by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized
form of the Classical Greek ἄκορνα, -ης (noun), name given to a kind
of thistle by Theophrastus, peripatetic philosopher, disciple of Aristotle,
botanist and naturalist, died towards 288 BC.
