Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, étalée à érigée, à tiges quadrangulaires, ramifiées, couvertes de poils glanduleux.

Feuilles alternes, composées trifoliées, à long pétiole, à folioles lancéolées à obovales, dentées au sommet, glabres dessus et poilues dessous. Stipules lancéolées, à dents fines et profondes.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaune vif, de 2 à 4 mm de long, réunies par 2 à 5 en grappes axillaires de 5 à 10 mm de long, à pédoncule plus court que la feuille sous-jacente. Corolle papilionacée, à pétales dépassant nettement le calice, à étendard plus long que les ailes et que la carène. Calice à 5 sépales soudés à la base, à poils glanduleux. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, gousses de 5 à 10 mm de diamètre, enroulées sur 2 ou 3 spires superposées dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre, sans trou central et sans épines, d’abord à poils glanduleux puis glabres à maturité.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, bright yellow, from 2 to 4 mm long, joined together by 2 to 5 in axillary racemes from 5 to 10 mm long, with a peduncle shorter than the underlying leaf. Corolla papilionaceous, with petals conspicuously exceeding the calyx, with the standard longer than the wings and than the keel. Calyx with 5 partly fused sepals, with glandulous hairs. Ovary superior.

Fruits, pods from 5 to 10 mm in diameter, coiled clockwise on 2 or 3 superimposed whorls, without a central hole and without thorns, initially with glandulous hairs, then glabrous at maturity.

de Perse.

Rugosa : emprunt du latin rugosus, -a, -um (adj.) [ < ruga, -ae (nom)

= la ride, la rugosité ] = ridé, rugueux.

Medicago : borrowed from Classical Greek μηδικός, -ή, -όν (adj)

= from Media (region of Persia), referring to the text of Theophrastus,

peripatetic philosopher, disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist,

died towards 288 BC, who believed that the plant was native to Persia.

Rugosa : borrowed from Latin rugosus, -a, -um (adj) [ < ruga, -ae (noun)

= wrinkle, roughness ] = wrinkled, rough.
