Plante herbacée, monoïque, à tiges plus ou moins glabres, libérant un suc laiteux quand on les coupe, généralement solitaires, dressées, rougeâtres.

Feuilles alternes, simples, obovales à spatulées, vert clair, glabres, denticulées, les inférieures plus petites que les supérieures.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, verdâtres ou jaunâtres, entourées de bractées vertes en forme de coupe, réunies en ombelles à 5 rayons de 2 à 4 cm de long, entourées de 5 grandes bractées. Chaque rayon se ramifie en 3 branches, elles-mêmes fourchues. Les glandes florales sont vertes, entières, arrondies en avant. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules lisses, non ailées, arrondies, de 2 à 4 mm de long.

Plant herbaceous, monoecious. Stems more or less glabrous, releasing a milky sap when cut, generally solitary, erect, reddish.

Leaves alternate, simple, obovate to spatulate, light green, glabrous, denticulate, the inferior ones smaller than the superior ones.

Flowers radially symmetrical, greenish or yellowish, surrounded by green cup-shaped bracts, joined together in umbels with 5 rays from 2 to 4 cm long, surrounded by 5 tall bracts. Each ray ramifies in 3 forked branches. The floral glands are green, entire, rounded ahead. Ovary superior.

Fruits, smooth, nonwinged, rounded capsules, from 2 to 4 mm long.

par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C.

nom donné en l’honneur d’Euphorbe, médecin du roi Juba de

Mauritanie au 1er siècle après J.-C.

Helioscopia : adjectif créé par les botanistes, forme latinisée du grec

ancien ἡλιοσκόπιον, -ου (nom) [ < ἥλιος, -ου (nom) = le soleil +

σκοπέω (verbe) = regarder, observer ] = qui regarde le soleil, nom

donné à une sorte d’euphorbe par Aristote, philosophe et

encyclopédiste grec mort en 322 av. J.-C.
