Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, mince, à duvet grisâtre ou blanchâtre, à tiges sans feuilles dans leur partie supérieure.

Feuilles alternes, elliptiques, dentées et lobées, cotonneuses en dessous, à bords très épineux, avec des nervures blanches. La base des feuilles se prolonge sur la tige comme une aile.

Fleurs roses ou violettes, toutes tubulées, réunies en capitules solitaires de 14 à 16 mm de diamètre, attachés au sommet d’un long pédoncule non feuillé. Bractées de l’involucre très imbriquées, à courte épine terminale; bractées intérieures souvent violettes au sommet, bractées extérieures vertes et cotonneuses. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes à 4 angles, à aigrette dont les poils sont denticulés uniquement dans leur partie supérieure.

Leaves alternate, elliptic, toothed and lobed, downy on the lower part, with very spiny edges, with white veins. The base of the leaves is prolonged on the stem like a wing.

Flowers pink or violet, with only disk-florets, joined together in solitary capitula from 14 to 16 mm in diameter, attached to the top of a long nonleafy peduncle. Bracts of the involucre very imbricate, with a short terminal thorn; interior bracts often violet at the top, external bracts green and downy. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, achenes with 4 angles, with a pappus whose hairs are denticulate only in their upper part.

= la tache blanche, en référence aux feuilles bariolées de blanc.

Tyrimnus : borrowed from Classical Greek Τυρίμνος, -ου (proper noun)

= Tyrimnos, divinity of Thyatira, ancient city of Lydia, later identified

with Apollo.
