Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, érigée, à bulbe de 10 à 16 mm de diamètre, à hampe florale non feuillée, glabre.

Feuilles à la base, simples, linéaires, dentées, glabres, de 5 à 8 cm de long et de 3 à 7 mm de large, avec une ligne médiane pâle au-dessus, commençant à pousser à la fin de la floraison.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, jaune vif, de 20 à 30 mm de diamètre et d’environ 30 mm de long, solitaires, à l’aisselle d’une spathe membraneuse égalant environ les trois quarts de la longueur des tépales. Périanthe à 6 tépales oblongs, de 4 à 8 mm de large, soudés à la base, en tube, à sommet pointu. 6 étamines. 1 style. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, capsules charnues, à 3 loges.

Leaves at the base, simple, linear, toothed, glabrous, from 5 to 8 cm long and from 3 to 7 mm across, with a median pale line above, starting to grow at the end of flowering.

Flowers radially symmetrical, bright yellow, from 20 to 30 mm in diameter and approximately 30 mm long, solitary, at the axil of a membranous spathe approximately three quarters as long as the tepals. Perianth with 6 oblong tepals from 4 to 8 mm across, partly fused in tube, with a pointed top. 6 stamens. 1 style. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, fleshy capsules with 3 loculi.

[ < Sicilia, -ae (nom propre) = la Sicile ] = de Sicile, qui vient de Sicile.

Sternbergia : name given in honour of Count Kaspar Maria von

Sternberg (1761-1838), Czech clergyman and botanist, promoter of

natural sciences, founder of the Bohemian National Museum

in Prague.

Sicula : borrowed from Latin siculus, -a, -um (adj)

comes from Sicily.
