Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges de ± 7 mm de diamètre, rougeâtres, ramifiées, anguleuses, glabres dans le bas, à poils glanduleux rouges au sommet.

Feuilles à la base et alternes, elliptiques à lancéolées, divisées pennatipartites à pennatiséquées, parfois entières, de 10 à 18 cm de long, de 3,5 à 10 cm de large, vertes à rouges, sessiles, à lobes profonds, dentées, glabres, bordées d’épines douces, embrassant la tige par 2 lobes basaux arrondis et en spirale.

Fleurs toutes ligulées, réunies en capitules jaune vif de 25 à 40 mm de diamètre. Capitules ouverts uniquement en début de matinée. Involucre à 35 à 45 bractées vertes, à poils glanduleux blancs et glandes brunes. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes à aigrette, lisses ou avec quelques petits cils sur les bords.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems reddish, branched, angular, approximately 7 mm in diameter, glabrous at bottom, with red glandulous hairs at the top.

Leaves at the base and alternate, elliptic to lanceolate, dissected pinnatipartite to pinnatisect, sometimes entire, from 10 to 18 cm long, from 3.5 to 10 cm across, green to red, sessile, with deep, toothed, glabrous lobes, bordered by soft thorns, clasping the stem with 2 spirally rounded basal lobes.

Flowers with only ray-florets, joined together in bright yellow capitula from 25 to 40 mm in diameter. Capitula open only in the early morning. Involucre with 35 to 45 green bracts, with white glandulous hairs and brown glands. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, achenes with a pappus, smooth or with some small fine hairs on edges.

Asper : emprunt du latin asper, -era, -erum (adj.) = rugueux,

raboteux, en référence aux poils rudes des tiges et aux bords épineux

des feuilles.

Sonchus : name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died

in 79 AD, Latinized form of the Classical Greek σόγκος (σόγχος), -ου,

name given to the plant by Theophrastus, peripatetic philosopher,

disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist, died towards 288 BC.

Asper : borrowed from Latin asper, -era, -erum (adj) = rough,

uneven, referring to the rough-haired stems and to the spiny-margined

leaves.
