Plante herbacée, à souche souvent ligneuse, hermaphrodite, poilue, sécrétant du latex quand on la coupe, à tiges à ailes épineuses discontinues.

Feuilles alternes, divisées pennatifides, à divisions profondes, épineuses, ondulées sur les bords, parcourues par de fortes nervures blanches. Feuilles inférieures simples, oblongues, piquantes, sur un long pétiole. Feuilles supérieures plus rigides et plus épineuses.

Fleurs jaune doré, toutes ligulées, réunies en capitules de 20 à 30 mm de diamètre, attachés à l’aisselle des feuilles, le long des tiges. Bractées de l’involucre lancéolées, à bords membraneux, rétrécies en pointe aiguë. 3 bractées dentées et épineuses entourant l’involucre proprement dit. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes à 2 et parfois 4 soies très courtes.

Plant herbaceous, with an often woody stock, hermaphrodite, hairy, releasing a latex when cut. Stems with discontinuous spiny wings.

Leaves alternate, dissected pinnatifid, with deep divisions, spiny, undulate on the edges, traversed by strong white veins. Lower leaves simple, oblong, prickly, on a long petiole. Upper leaves more rigid and more spiny.

Flowers gilded yellow, with only ray-florets, joined together in capitula from 20 to 30 mm in diameter, attached at the axil of the leaves, along the stems. Bracts of the involucre lanceolate, with membranous edges, narrowed in an acute point. 3 toothed and spiny bracts surrounding the involucre itself. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, achenes with 2 and sometimes 4 very short bristles.
