Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges filiformes, érigées à étalées, retombantes, presque sans feuilles, grêles, anguleuses, glabres, très ramifiées. Plante originaire du Mexique.
Feuilles rares, opposées, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, dentées, glabres, de 1 à 2 cm de long, tombant très tôt dans la saison. Elles sont réduites à des écailles dans la partie supérieure des tiges.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, rouges, en tube, pédicellées, de 5 à 10 mm de diamètre et de 20 à 30 mm de long, réunies par 2 ou 3 en panicules de 3 à 4 cm de long. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés en tube. Calice à 5 sépales vert pâle, soudés à la base. 5 étamines soudées au tube de la corolle. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules globuleuses, brunes, à 2 loges renfermant de nombreuses graines.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, native to Mexico. Stems thread-like, erect to spread out, hanging down, almost without leaves, slender, angular, glabrous, very branched.
Leaves rare, opposite, simple, linear to lanceolate, toothed, glabrous, from 1 to 2 cm long, falling very early into the season. They are reduced to scales in the upper part of the stems.
Flowers radially symmetrical, red, in tube, pedicellate, from 5 to 10 mm in diameter and from 20 to 30 mm long, joined together by 2 or 3 in panicles from 3 to 4 cm long. Corolla with 5 petals fused in tube. Calyx with 5 pale green sepals, partly fused. 5 stamens fused with the tube of the corolla. Ovary superior.
Fruits, globulous, brown capsules, with 2 loculi containing many seeds.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Russelia : nom donné en l’honneur de Alexander Russel (1715?-1768),
médecin et naturaliste écossais.
Equisetiformis : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < equisetum, -i (nom)
= la queue de cheval, la prêle + forma, -ae (nom) = la forme,
l’apparence ] = en forme de queue de cheval, qui ressemble à la prêle.
Russelia : name given in honour of Alexander Russel (1715?-1768),
Scottish doctor and naturalist.
Equisetiformis : adjective created by botanists
[ < equisetum, -i (noun) = horse tail, horsetail + forma, -ae (noun)
= la forme, l’apparence ] = with horse tail form, resembling the
horsetail.
