Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à souche ligneuse, à tiges ramifiées, hérissées de poils.
Feuilles alternes, divisées pennatifides à pennatipartites, à lobes lancéolés, à segments poilus, parfois dentés.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, rouges, solitaires, de 40 à 100 mm de diamètre, portées par un long pédoncule à poils étalés blancs ou rouges. Corolle à 4 pétales libres parfois tachés de noir à la base. Étamines nombreuses, libres entre elles, à filet étroit et rougeâtre, à anthère bleuâtre ou violacée. Style à 7 à 12 stigmates rayonnants sur un disque. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules globuleuses à ovoïdes, glabres, à sommet en disque aplati.

Leaves alternate, dissected pinnatifid to pinnatipartite, with lanceolate lobes, with hairy, sometimes toothed segments.
Flowers radially symmetrical, red, solitary, from 40 to 100 mm in diameter, carried by a long peduncle with white or red spread out hairs. Corolla with 4 free petals, sometimes with black marks at the base. Stamens numerous, free between them, with a narrow and reddish filament, with a bluish or purplish anther. Style with 7 to 12 stigmas spreading from the centre on a disc. Ovary superior.
Fruits, globose to ovoid, glabrous capsules, with the top in a flattened disc.

Papaver : emprunt du sanscrit papavara = le suc empoisonné,
nom donné à la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.
Rhoeas : emprunt du grec ancien ῥοιά, -ᾶς (nom) = le grenadier,
en référence à la couleur de la fleur.
Papaver : borrowed from Sanskrit papavara = poisoned juice,
name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD.
Rhoeas : borrowed from Classical Greek ῥοιά, -ᾶς (noun)
= pomegranate, referring to the colour of the flower.
