Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tige érigée, glabre, cylindrique, de 4 à 5 mm de diamètre.

Feuilles à la base et alternes, embrassantes, simples, lancéolées, vertes, de 5 à 6 cm de long, de 2 à 3 cm de large, entières, glabres, sessiles. Bractées plus longues que l’ovaire, parfois de la couleur des sépales.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, longues de 2 à 2,5 cm, réunies par 3 à 6 en épi de 4 à 5 cm de long. Sépales étalés vers l’arrière, de 10 à 14 mm de long, de 6 à 10 mm de large, rose vif, jaunâtres, pourpres ou blanchâtres, veinés de vert. Pétales unis, roses, poilus, triangulaires, de 4 à 5 mm de long, entiers, bruns à liseré jaune. Labelle de 10 à 13 mm de long, de 13 mm de large, brun pourpré, pendant, entier, à 2 gibosités coniques, à bords étalés ou repliés vers le bas. Macule petite, glabre, bleu métallique bordée de blanc, à appendice jaune redressé vers le haut, velu sur la partie distale brune. Ovaire infère.

Sepals spread out backwards, from 10 to 14 mm long, from 6 to 10 mm across, bright pink, yellowish, purple or whitish, veined of green. Petals self-coloured, pink, hairy, triangular, from 4 to 5 mm long, entire, brown with yellow edging. Labellum from 10 to 13 mm long, 13 mm across, brown purplish, hanging, entire, with 2 conical gibosities, with edges spread out or folded up downwards. Macula small, glabrous, metallic blue edged of white, with yellow appendix ascending upwards, very hairy on the brown distal part. Ovary inferior.

forme latinisée du grec ancien ὀφρύς, -ύος (nom) = le sourcil,

en référence à la pilosité du labelle, en particulier autour des bords.

Tenthredinifera : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < τενθρηδών, -όνος

(nom) = sorte de guêpe + φέρω (verbe) = porter ] = qui porte une

guêpe, en référence à l’aspect du labelle.

Ophrys : borrowed from Latin ophrys, -yos (noun) = bee orchid, name

given to several plants by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,

Latinized form of the Classical Greek ὀφρύς, -ύος (noun) = eyebrow,

referring to the hairiness of the labellum, particularly around margins.
