Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tige érigée, simple, cylindrique, glabre.

Feuilles à la base et alternes, simples, lancéolées, embrassantes, entières, glabres, vert un peu jaunâtre, de 8 à 15 cm de long, de 2 à 3,5 cm de large. Feuilles de la base présentes au moment de la floraison.  Bractée florale plus longue que l’ovaire.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, longues de ± 20 mm, réunies par 2 à 8 en épi de 12 à 18 cm de long. Sépales ovales à lancéolés, blancs, roses, verdâtres, de 12 à 16 mm de long, de 4 à 8 mm de large, le supérieur non rabattu en casque. Pétales velus, brun rougeâtre, linéaires à étroitement triangulaires, de 4 à 8 mm de long, de 1,5 à 2,5 mm de large, égalant environ les deux tiers des sépales, parfois auriculés, étalés ou rabattus vers l’arrière, à bords droits. Labelle brun à pourpre foncé, de 10 à 15 mm de long, de 12 à 19 mm de large (étalé), pendant à presque vertical, trilobé, à lobe médian beaucoup plus grand que les deux autres, à marge jaune, glabre, à appendice bien visible. Lobes latéraux à poils longs, denses et pourpres. Macule blanche bordée de mauve foncé, avec 2 taches mauve foncé à l’intérieur. Cavité stigmatique blanche traversée par une ligne noire. Ovaire infère.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stem erect, simple, cylindrical, glabrous.

Leaves at the base and alternate, simple, lanceolate, clasping, entire, glabrous, a little yellowish green, from 8 to 15 cm long, from 2 to 3.5 cm across. Basal leaves present at flowering time.  Floral bract longer than the ovary.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, ± 20 mm long, joined together by 2 to 8 in spike from 12 to 18 cm long. Sepals oval to lanceolate, white, pink, greenish, from 12 to 16 mm long, from 4 to 8 mm across, the superior one not folded back in a helmet. Petals very hairy, reddish brown, linear to narrowly triangular, from 4 to 8 mm long, from 1.5 to 2.5 mm across, approximately equalling two thirds of the sepals, sometimes auriculate, spread out or folded back backwards, with straight edges. Labellum brown to dark purple, from 10 to 15 mm long, from 12 to 19 mm across (spread out), hanging to almost vertical, trilobate, with median lobe much larger than the two others, with glabrous, yellow edge, with quite conspicuous appendix. Lateral lobes with long, dense and purple hairs. Macula white fringed with dark mauve, with 2 dark mauve specks inside. White stigmatic cavity crossed by a black line. Ovary inferior.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Ophrys : emprunt du latin ophrys, -yos  (nom) = ophrys, nom donné à

        plusieurs plantes par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,

        forme latinisée du grec ancien ὀφρύς, -ύος  (nom) = le sourcil,

        en référence à la pilosité du labelle, en particulier autour des bords.

    Reinholdii : nom donné en l’honneur de Reinhold (1802-1880),

        médecin à Athènes.


    Ophrys : borrowed from Latin ophrys, -yos  (noun) = bee orchid, name

        given to several plants by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,

        Latinized form of the Classical Greek ὀφρύς, -ύος  (noun) = eyebrow,

        referring to the hairiness of the labellum, particularly around margins.

    Reinholdii : name given in honour of Reinhold (1802-1880), doctor

        in Athens.
