Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges érigées, parfois étalées sur le sol, glabres, striées.
Feuilles alternes, divisées pennatiséquées, à segments linéaires étroits, glabres.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, bleu pâle ou blanchâtres, souvent veinées de vert, solitaires, de 20 à 30 mm de diamètre. Pas de couronne de bractées foliacées à la base de chaque fleur. Périanthe à 5 tépales pétaloïdes, libres, ovales, rétrécis en onglet égalant presque le limbe, nettement plus grands que les nectaires qui entourent les étamines. Étamines nombreuses, mauve pâle, à anthère brunâtre. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, 3 à 8 follicules à 3 nervures dorsales saillantes, soudés sur la moitié ou sur les deux tiers de leur longueur, prolongés par le style persistant. Graines un peu rugueuses.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems erect, sometimes spread out over the ground, glabrous, covered in ridges.
Leaves alternate, dissected pinnatisect, with narrow, glabrous, linear segments.
Flowers radially symmetrical, pale blue or whitish, often with green veins, solitary, from 20 to 30 mm in diameter. No crown of foliaceous bracts at the base of each flower. Perianth with 5 petaloid, free, ovate tepals, narrowed in a claw almost equalizing the limb, conspicuously larger than the nectaries which surround the stamens. Stamens numerous, pale mauve, with a brownish anther. Ovary superior.
Fruits, 3 to 8 follicles with 3 protruding dorsal veins, fused on half or two thirds their length, prolonged by the persistent style. Seeds a little rough.

Nigella : emprunt du latin nigellus, -a, -um (adj.)
[ < niger, -gra, -grum (adj.) = noir + -ellus, -a, -um (diminutif) = petit,
un peu ] = noirâtre, en référence à ses graines noirâtres.
Arvensis : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < arvum, -i (nom)
= le champ cultivé ] = qui pousse dans les champs cultivés.
Nigella : borrowed from Latin nigellus, -a, -um (adj)
[ < niger, -gra, -grum (adj) = black + -ellus, -a, -um (diminutive)
= a little ] = blackish, referring to its blackish seeds.
