Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, érigée, à tiges un peu ramifiées, poilues au moins au sommet.

Feuilles inférieures opposées, feuilles supérieures alternes, simples, linéaires à elliptiques, entières, de 30 à 50 mm de long, étroites, à pétiole très court, sans stipules. Bractées foliacées, étroites et linéaires.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, rouge rosâtre, de 9 à 18 mm de long, portées par 1 pédicelle très court, réunies en grappes terminales lâches. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés en 2 lèvres, la supérieure bilobée, l’inférieure trilobée. Calice à 5 sépales soudés à la base, étroits, inégaux, velus, plus longs que les pétales. 4 étamines inégales. 1 style allongé, terminé par 1 stigmate renflé. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules ovales, poilues, de 6 à 10 mm de long.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, erect. Stems a little branched, hairy at least at the top.

Leaves opposite, the upper ones alternate, simple, linear to elliptic, entire, from 30 to 50 mm long, narrow, with a very short petiole, without stipules. Bracts foliaceous, narrow and linear.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, pinkish red, from 9 to 18 mm long, carried by 1 very short pedicel, joined together in loose terminal racemes. Corolla with 5 petals fused in 2 lips, the higher one two-lobed, the lower one three-lobed. Calyx with 5 partly fused, narrow, unequal, very hairy sepals, longer than the petals. 4 unequal stamens. 1 lengthened style finished by 1 swollen stigma. Ovary superior.

Fruits, ovate, hairy capsules, from 6 to 10 mm long.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Misopates : emprunt du grec ancien μισόπαθος, -ου  (nom)

        [ < μῖσος, -ους  (nom) = la haine + ἔπαθον, aoriste de πάσχω  (verbe)

        = souffrir ] = qui déteste souffrir, nom donné à une plante inconnue par

        Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C. Il s’agit

        peut-être d’une recommandation de ne pas piétiner cette plante

        gracieuse.

    Orontium : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < ὄρος, -ους  (nom)

        = la montagne ] = qui vient des montagnes.

        adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < Orontes, -ae  (nom propre)

        = l’Oronte, fleuve de Syrie, forme latinisée du grec ancien

        Ὀρόντης, -ου  (nom propre) = l’Oronte ] = de la région de l’Oronte,

        qui vient de Syrie.


    Misopates : borrowed from Classical Greek μισόπαθος, -ου  (noun)

        [ < μῖσος, -ους  (noun) = hate + ἔπαθον, aorist of πάσχω  (verb)

        = to suffer, to have pains ] = hating suffer, name given to an unknown

        plant by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and botanist died in 90 AD.

        It is perhaps a recommendation not to trample this graceful plant.

    Orontium : adjective created by botanists [ < ὄρος, -ους  (noun)

        = mountain ] = of or from mountains, which comes from mountains.

        adjective created by botanists [ < Orontes, -ae  (proper noun)

        = the Orontes River in Syria, Latinized form of the Classical Greek
