Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, étalée, prostrée, glabre ou légèrement poilue.

Feuilles alternes, composées trifoliées, à folioles de 15 mm de long au plus, ovales à cunéiformes, dentées au sommet. Stipules profondément dentées.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaunes, de 2 à 5 mm de long, solitaires ou réunies par 2 à 5 en grappes à pédoncule plus long que la feuille sous-jacente. Corolle papilionacée. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, gousses de 10 à 18 mm de diamètre, enroulées sur 4 ou 6 spires superposées dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre, sans trou central et sans épines.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, spread out, prostrate, glabrous or slightly hairy.

Leaves alternate, compound trifoliate, with leaflets 15 mm long at most, ovate to wedge-shaped, toothed at the top. Stipules deeply toothed.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, yellow, from 2 to 5 mm long, solitary or joined together by 2 to 5 in racemes with a peduncle longer than the underlying leaf. Corolla papilionaceous. Ovary superior.

Fruits, pods from 10 to 18 mm in diameter, coiled clockwise on 4 or 6 superimposed whorls, without a central hole and without thorns.

Medicago : emprunt du grec ancien μηδικός, -ή, -όν (adj.) = de Médie

(région de Perse), en référence au texte de Théophraste,

philosophe péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste,

mort vers 288 av. J.-C., qui croyait que la plante était originaire

de Perse.

Orbicularis : emprunt du latin orbicularis, -is, -e (adj.)

[ < orbis, -is (nom) = le cercle, la roue + -ulus (diminutif) = petit cercle,

petite roue ] = circulaire, orbiculaire, en référence à la forme du fruit.

Medicago : borrowed from Classical Greek μηδικός, -ή, -όν (adj)

= from Media (region of Persia), referring to the text of Theophrastus,

peripatetic philosopher, disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist,

died towards 288 BC, who believed that the plant was native to Persia.

Orbicularis : borrowed from Latin orbicularis, -is, -e (adj)

[ < orbis, -is (noun) = circle, wheel + -ulus (diminutive)

= small circle, small wheel ] = circular, orbicular, referring to the

shape of the fruit.
