Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, parfumée, érigée, à rhizome épais, à tiges aériennes glabres, ramifiées au sommet, cylindriques, de 5 à 7 mm de diamètre.

Feuilles à la base et alternes, simples, oblongues, en forme de glaive, entières, glabres, engainantes, à fin bord membraneux, de 20 à 50 cm de long, de 2 à 4,5 cm de large, vertes, recouvertes d’une pruine grisâtre.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, de 6 à 8 cm de diamètre, par 2, terminales, à 6 tépales soudés en tube de 15 à 25 mm de long. 3 tépales internes dressés, blanc pur, sans barbe et 3 tépales externes étalés, blanc pur, veinés de jaune brunâtre à la base, à barbe blanche à pointe jaune. Tépales de 60 mm de long (sans le tube) et de 30 mm de large. 3 étamines à filet blanc et à anthère blanche. Spathes vertes à la floraison, papyracées à la pointe, souvent teintées de pourpre. 1 style à 3 stigmates de 40 mm de long, de 15 mm de large, blancs et ressemblant aux tépales. Ovaire infère.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, fragrant, erect, with thick rhizome. Stems aerial, glabrous, branched at the top, cylindrical, from 5 to 7 mm in diameter.

Leaves at the base and alternate, simple, oblong, sword-shaped, entire, glabrous, sheathing, with thin membranous edge, from 20 to 50 cm long, from 2 to 4.5 cm across, green, covered in a greyish bloom.

Flowers radially symmetrical, from 6 to 8 cm in diameter, by 2, terminal, with 6 tepals fused in tube from 15 to 25 mm long. 3 internal tepals erect, pure white, without awn and 3 external tepals spread out, pure white, with brownish yellow veins at the base, with white awn with yellow point. Tepals 60 mm long (without the tube) and 30 mm across. 3 stamens with white filament and white anther. Spathes green at flowering, papyraceous at the point, often with purple marks. 1 style with 3 stigmas 40 mm long, 15 mm across, white and resembling the tepals. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, oblong and trigonous capsules.

nom donné à la plante par Théophraste, philosophe péripatéticien,

disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste, mort vers 288 av. J.-C.,

en référence aux couleurs vives et variées des pétales.

Albicans : emprunt du latin albicans, -ntis (part. prés.)

[ < albico, -as, -are (verbe) = blanchir, être blanc ] = qui devient blanc,

qui est blanc, en référence aux poils argentés à blanchâtres de sa tige.

Iris : borrowed from Classical Greek ἶρις, -ιδος (noun) = rainbow, iris,

name given to the plant by Theophrastus, peripatetic philosopher,

disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist, died towards 288 BC,

referring to the bright and varied colours of the petals.

Albicans : borrowed from Latin albicans, -ntis (pres participle)

[ < albico, -as, -are (verb) = to make white, to be white ] = which turns

white, which is white, referring to the silvery white hairs in its stem.
