Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, sécrétant un latex quand on la coupe, à tiges généralement peu ramifiées et glabres.

Feuilles alternes, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, à nervures parallèles, les caulinaires à base engainante.

Fleurs lilas rosâtre, toutes ligulées, réunies en capitule solitaire, souvent par 5 à 8 et nettement dépassées par les 5 à 8 bractées pointues de l’involucre. Souvent, les fleurs ne s’ouvrent que le matin. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes longs et fusiformes, terminés par un long bec plus ou moins renflé en dessous de l’aigrette.

Fruits, long and spindle-shaped achenes, finished by a long beak more or less swollen on the lower part of the pappus.
