Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à souche ligneuse, à tiges dressées, glabres, peu ramifiées, à base un peu ligneuse.
Feuilles en rosette à la base et opposées décussées, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, de 1 à 3 mm de largeur, entières à denticulées. Feuilles de la base séchées à la floraison.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, roses tachées de pourpre, solitaires, de 10 à 20 mm de diamètre. 5 pétales libres, dentés au sommet. Calicule formé de 4 écailles à peine plus courtes que le calice. Ovaire supère.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, with a woody stock. Stems erect, glabrous, not very branched, with the base a little woody.
Leaves in a rosette at the base and opposite decussate, simple, linear to lanceolate, from 1 to 3 mm across, entire to denticulate. Basal leaves dried at flowering.
Flowers radially symmetrical, pink with purple marks, solitary, from 10 to 20 mm in diameter. 5 free petals, toothed at the top. Epicalyx formed by 4 scales scarcely shorter than the calyx. Ovary superior.

Dianthus : nom créé par les botanistes [ < Ζεύς, Διός (nom propre)
= Zeus, Jupiter + ἄνθος, -ους (nom) = la fleur ] = la fleur de Zeus,
en référence à la beauté de sa fleur.
Strictus : emprunt du latin strictus, -a, -um (part. passé)
[ < stringo, -is, -ere (verbe) = serrer, lier, arracher ]
= serré, arraché, droit, rassemblé, rigide.
Dianthus : name created by botanists [ < Ζεύς, Διός (proper noun)
= Zeus, Jupiter + ἄνθος, -ους (noun) = flower] = the flower of Zeus,
referring to the beauty of the flower.
