Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, en touffes, à tiges érigées, robustes, pourpre foncé, glabres, recouvertes d’une pruine, cylindriques, simples ou avec une ramification.

Feuilles à la base et alternes, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, entières, pointues, glabres, sessiles, cylindriques, de 30 à 60 cm de long, de 2,5 à 3 cm de large.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaune orangé, de 50 à 60 mm de long, presque à 2 lèvres, groupées en épis s’allongeant à la fructification. 2 bractées pourpres à la base de chaque fleur. Corolle à 6 tépales soudés, glabres, irréguliers, le supérieur long, en casque, les 5 autres plus petits. 3 étamines saillantes, à filet jaune pâle, à extrémité orange. 1 style jaune à 3 stigmates orangés. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, capsules à 3 loges, vertes puis pourpre foncé, glabres, de 8 à 10 mm de diamètre.

Corolla with 6 tepals fused, glabrous, irregular, the superior one long, helmet-shaped, the 5 others smaller. 3 protruding stamens, with pale yellow filament, with orange tip. 1 yellow style with 3 orange stigmas. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, capsules with 3 loculi, green then dark purple, glabrous, from 8 to 10 mm in diameter.
