Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, prostrée, ascendante ou dressée, à tiges glabres, quadrangulaires.
Feuilles opposées, simples, ovales à lancéolées, entières, de 15 à 25 mm de long, sessiles, pointues, embrassantes, glabres. Feuilles inférieures dressées, feuilles supérieures étalées, parfois même renversées.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, rouges, rarement bleues ou blanchâtres, de 5 à 10 mm de diamètre, solitaires, sur un pédoncule plus long que la feuille sous-jacente. Corolle à 5 pétales à peine soudés à la base, à sommet arrondi et frangé, à bord cilié (souvent plus de 40 poils glanduleux par pétale), ne se recouvrant pas. Petit onglet rouge plus foncé. Calice à 5 sépales lancéolés à dents très aiguës. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules sphériques un peu plus courtes que le calice persistant.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, prostrate, ascending or erect. Stems glabrous, quadrangular.
Leaves opposite, simple, ovate to lanceolate, entire, from 15 to 25 mm long, sessile, pointed, clasping, glabrous. Lower leaves erect, upper leaves spread out, sometimes even resupinate.
Flowers radially symmetrical, red, seldom blue or whitish, from 5 to 10 mm in diameter, solitary, on a stalk longer than the underlying leaf. Corolla with 5 petals hardly partly fused, with a round, fringed top, edge ciliate (often more than 40 glandulous hairs per petal), not overlapping. Small darker red claw. Calyx with 5 lanceolate sepals with very acute teeth. Ovary superior.
Fruits, spherical capsules a little shorter than the persistent calyx.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Anagallis : forme latinisée du grec ancien ἀναγαλλίς, -ίδος (nom)
= nom donné à la pimprenelle par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste
grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C. [ < ἀνά- (préfixe) = de nouveau +
ἀγαλλιάω (verbe) = se réjouir ], en référence aux fleurs qui sont
ouvertes longtemps et qui procurent ainsi un plaisir chaque jour
renouvelé.
Arvensis : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < arvum, -i (nom)
= le champ cultivé ] = qui pousse dans les champs cultivés.
Anagallis : Latinized form of the Classical Greek ἀναγαλλίς, -ίδος
(noun) = name given to the Salad burnet by Dioscorides, Greek doctor
and botanist died in 90 AD [ < ἀνά- (prefix) = again + ἀγαλλιάω
(verb) = to be delighted ], referring to flowers which are open a long
time and thus provide each day a renewed pleasure.
Arvensis : adjective created by botanists [ < arvum, -i (noun)
= field, cultivated land ] = which grows in cultivated fields.
