Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges cylindriques, velues, creuses, rameuses, rougeâtres, couchées ou étalées, de ± 0,6 mm de diamètre.

Feuilles opposées, simples, ovales, arrondies à deltoïdes, dentées, vert pâle, pétiolées, ciliées, à poils épars dessus et poilues dessous.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, bleues, à court tube blanc, veinées de mauve ou de bleu plus foncé, de 4 à 7 mm de diamètre, solitaires à l’aisselle des feuilles, portées par un pédoncule poilu s’incurvant à la floraison, plus court que la feuille sous-jacente ou l’égalant. Corolle à peine plus longue que le calice, à 4 pétales soudés à la base, un peu inégaux (lobe supérieur un peu plus petit que les autres). Calice à 4 sépales ovales, soudés à la base, verts, unis, à bords rougeâtres. 2 étamines saillantes, à filet blanc et à anthère violet foncé. 1 style à 1 stigmate blanc. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules vert clair, de 4 à 5 mm de large, de 2 à 3 mm d’épaisseur, aplaties, réniformes, nettement échancrées au sommet, dépassées par le style persistant de 1 mm de long, à poils glanduleux blancs, à 7 à 10 graines.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems numerous, cylindrical, very hairy, hollow, branched, reddish, lying or spread out, ± 0.6 mm in diameter.

Leaves opposite, simple, ovate, rounded to deltoid, toothed, pale green, petiolate, ciliate, with scattered hairs above and hairy below.

Flowers radially symmetrical, blue, with a short white tube, with mauve or darker blue veins, from 4 to 7 mm in diameter, solitary at the axil of the leaves, carried by a hairy peduncle curving at flowering, shorter than the underlying leaf or equalling it. Corolla scarcely longer than the calyx, with 4 partly fused petals, a little unequal (upper lobe a little smaller than the others). Calyx with 4 ovate, partly fused, green, self-coloured sepals, with reddish edges. 2 protruding stamens with a white filament and a dark violet anther. 1 style with 1 white stigma. Ovary superior.

Fruits, pale green, flattened, kidney-shaped capsules, from 4 to 5 mm across, from 2 to 3 mm thick, definitely indented at the top, exceeded by the persistent style, 1 mm long, with white glandulous hairs, with 7 to 10 seeds.

Étymologie / Etymology :

Veronica : nom donné en l’honneur de Sainte Véronique. Selon la

tradition, quand le Christ est tombé sur le chemin vers le Golgotha,

une femme appelée Véronique lui essuya le visage et l’image du Christ

serait restée sur son voile. Les fleurs de ce genre apparaissent aux

environs de la Semaine Sainte.

Polita : emprunt du latin politus, -a, -um (adj.) = lisse, brillant, élégant.

Veronica : name given in honour of Saint Veronica. According to the

tradition, when Christ fell on the way to the Golgotha, a woman called

Veronica wiped his face and an image of Christ would have remained

on her veil. The flowers of this genus appear around the Holy Week.

Polita : borrowed from Latin politus, -a, -um (adj) = smooth, shiny,

elegant.
