Plante à souche ligneuse, hermaphrodite, très aromatique, à tiges ramifiées, étalées puis ascendantes, couvertes de poils duveteux quand elles sont jeunes.
Feuilles alternes, simples, linéaires, longues au plus de 30 mm, étroites, sessiles, couvertes d’un épais duvet blanc, à bords enroulés dessous.
Fleurs jaunes, toutes tubulées, réunies en capitules ovoïdes de 2 à 4 mm de diamètre, presque 2 fois plus longs que larges, entourés de bractées membraneuses et persistantes, groupés en bouquets compacts de 80 mm de large au plus. Involucre de bractées jaune pâle terne, de forme ovoïde, presque cylindrique. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, petits akènes à aigrette.

Plant with a woody stock, hermaphrodite, very aromatic. Stems branched, spread out then ascending, covered in hoary hairs when they are youthful.
Leaves alternate, simple, linear, 30 mm long at most, narrow, sessile, covered in a thick white hoary pubescence, with coiled edges.
Flowers yellow, with only disk-florets, joined together in ovoid capitula from 2 to 4 mm in diameter, almost twice longer than wide, surrounded by membranous and persistent bracts, joined together in compact clusters, 80 mm across at most. Involucre of pale dull yellow bracts, ovoid, almost cylindrical. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, small achenes with a pappus.

Helichrysum : nom créé par les botanistes [ < ἥλιος, -ου (nom)
= le soleil + χρύσεος, -έα, -ον (nom) = en or, doré ] = doré comme le
soleil, en référence à la couleur éclatante des fleurs.
Italicum : emprunt du latin italicus, -a, -um (adj.)
[ < Italia, -ae (nom propre) = l’Italie ] = italien, d’Italie, qui vient d’Italie.
Helichrysum : name created by botanists [ < ἥλιος, -ου (noun)
= sun + χρύσεος, -έα, -ον (noun) = made of gold, gilded ] = gilded like
the sun, referring to the bright colour of the flowers.
Italicum : borrowed from Latin italicus, -a, -um (adj)
[ < Italia, -ae (proper noun) = Italy ] = Italian, of or from Italy, which
comes from Italy.
