Arbre monoïque, à écorce lisse, grisâtre, à rameaux épais et glabres, sécrétant un latex blanc quand on les coupe.
Feuilles alternes, de formes variables, divisées palmatifides à palmatipartites, larges, elliptiques à palmées à 3 à 7 lobes, vert clair luisant en dessous, de 10 à 20 cm de long, de 10 à 20 cm de large, couvertes de petits poils rudes, caduques, à long pétiole, à bords dentés en dents de scie.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, minuscules, mâles et femelles réunies à l’intérieur d’un réceptacle vert et charnu, creusé d’une cavité qui n’est ouverte dans sa partie supérieure que par un orifice étroit muni d’écailles. Les fleurs tapissent la paroi interne de cette cavité. Fleurs mâles à 3 tépales et 3 étamines, fleurs femelles à 5 tépales et à ovaire avec 1 style à 2 branches. Ovaire supère.
Fruits petits et nombreux inclus dans le réceptacle (figue) de 3 à 8 cm de long, vert ou violet brunâtre, qui devient charnu après la fécondation assurée par une petite espèce de guêpe.

Tree monoecious, with a smooth, greyish bark, with thick and glabrous branches, releasing a white latex when cut.
Leaves alternate, of variable shapes, dissected palmatifid to palmatipartite, wide, elliptic to palmate with 3 to 7 lobes, pale green shining below, from 10 to 20 cm long, from 10 to 20 cm across, covered in small, hard hairs, deciduous, with a long petiole, with serrated edges.
Flowers radially symmetrical, tiny, male and female joined together inside a green and fleshy receptacle, with a cavity which is open in its upper part only by one narrow opening provided with scales. The flowers line the internal wall of this cavity. Male flowers with 3 tepals and 3 stamens, female flowers with 5 tepals and one ovary with 1 two-branched style. Ovary superior.
Fruits small and numerous, included in the receptacle (fig) from 3 to 8 cm long, green or brownish violet, which become fleshy after the pollination ensured by a small species of wasp.
