Plante herbacée, monoïque, originaire du Sud de l’Afrique, à tiges rampantes, cylindriques, pleines, velues, pouvant atteindre 3 m de long.
Feuilles alternes, divisées pennatipartites à pennatiséquées, à lobes arrondis, poilues, longuement pétiolées, à faces rugueuses. Certaines sont transformées en vrilles pour permettre à la plante de s'accrocher et de grimper sur des supports variés.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, jaunes, solitaires à l’aisselle des feuilles, portées par un pédicelle long de 15 à 20 mm, couvert de longs poils laineux. Corolle des fleurs mâles à 5 pétales soudés à la base, parfois bilobés. Corolle des fleurs femelles à 5 pétales soudés au-dessus de l’ovaire. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, baies énormes (pastèques), de 5 à 20 kg, sphériques à oblongues, comestibles, vert foncé marbré de blanc, à chair rose ou jaunâtre, à graines noires.

Plant herbaceous, monoecious, native to the South of Africa. Stems trailing, cylindrical, solid, hairy, able to reach 3 m long.
Leaves alternate, dissected pinnatipartite to pinnatisect, with rounded lobes, hairy, lengthily petiolate, with rough faces. Some are transformed into tendrils to enable the plant to cling to and climb on varied supports.
Flowers radially symmetrical, yellow, solitary at the axil of the leaves, carried by a long pedicel from 15 to 20 mm, covered in long woolly hairs. Corolla of the male flowers with 5 partly fused petals, sometimes two-lobed. Corolla of the female flowers with 5 petals fused above the ovary. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, enormous berries (water melons), from 5 to 20 kg, spherical to oblong, edible, dark green marbled white, with pink or yellowish flesh, with black seeds.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Citrullus : nom créé par les botanistes [ < citrus, -i (nom) = le citronnier
+ -ulus (diminutif) = petit ] = le petit citronnier, en référence à la
couleur de la chair de son fruit.
Lanatus : emprunt du latin lanatus, -a, -um (adj.)
[ < lana, -ae (nom) = la laine ] = laineux, couvert de laine,
en référence aux poils laineux qui recouvrent la plante.
Citrullus : name created by botanists [ < citrus, -i (noun)
= lemon tree + -ulus (diminutive) = small ] = small lemon tree,
referring to the colour of the flesh of its fruit.
Lanatus : borrowed from Latin lanatus, -a, -um (adj)
[ < lana, -ae (noun) = wool ] = wooly, covered with wool,
referring to the woolly hairs which cover the plant.
