Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à racine principale développée, à tiges cylindriques, dichotomes, étalées, ramifiées, à poils courts et nombreux.
Feuilles opposées, simples, linéaires à ovales, sans stipules, finement ciliées sur les bords et plus ou moins dentées.
Fleurs à symétrie presque radiaire, en tube, lilas à blanchâtres, de 1 mm de diamètre, réunies en cymes bipares, presque globuleuses, d’environ 5 mm de diamètre. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés à la base. Calice vert jaunâtre en forme de vessie globuleuse ouverte à son sommet et à 6 dents renversées vers l’intérieur. 3 étamines. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, akènes velus, enflés, de 4 à 5 mm de diamètre, à 3 loges dont une seule est fertile, réunis en bouquets denses.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, with a main root developed. Stems cylindrical, dichotomous, spread out, branched, with short and numerous hairs.
Leaves opposite, simple, linear to ovate, without stipules, finely ciliate on the edges and more or less toothed.
Flowers almost radially symmetrical, tubular, lilac to whitish, 1 mm in diameter, joined together in symmetrical, almost globose cymes, approximately 5 mm in diameter. Corolla with 5 partly fused petals. Calyx yellowish green in the shape of a globose bladder opened at its top, with 6 teeth resupinate towards the interior. 3 stamens. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, very hairy, swollen achenes, from 4 to 5 mm in diameter, with 3 loculi among which only one is fertile, joined together in dense clusters.

Valerianella : nom créé par les botanistes [ < valeriana, -ae (nom)
= la valériane + -ella (suffixe) = petit ] = la petite valériane.
Vesicaria : emprunt du latin vesicarius, -a, -um (adj.)
[ < vesica, -ae (nom) = la vessie ] = de vessie, comme une vessie,
en référence aux akènes renflés comme une vessie.
Valerianella : name created by botanists [ < valeriana, -ae (noun)
= valerian + -ella (suffix) = petit ] = small valerian.
Vesicaria : borrowed from Latin vesicarius, -a, -um (adj)
[ < vesica, -ae (noun) = bladder ] = of or from bladder, bladder like,
referring to the achenes swollen like a bladder.
