Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, en touffe généralement prostrée à rampante, à rameaux étalés ou même retombants, à tiges couvertes de poils hirsutes dirigés de haut en bas.

Feuilles alternes, composées pennées ou bipennées, à folioles vertes, dentées, poilues.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanc rosé, de 1 mm de diamètre, réunies en ombelles composées, compactes, opposées aux feuilles, à 2 ou 3 rayons principaux très courts, donnant aux fleurs un aspect de glomérules. Pédoncule des ombelles de moins de 1 cm. Corolle à 5 pétales égaux, libres, échancrés. Calice à 5 sépales aigus. Involucre non développé. Styles dressés, très courts, sans poils. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes ovoïdes de 2 à 3,5 mm de long, de 2 mm de large, à verrues et épines droites d’un seul côté.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, tufted, generally prostrate to trailing, with spread out or even hanging down branches. Stems covered in unkempt hairs directed downwards.

Leaves alternate, compound pinnate or bipinnately, with green, toothed, hairy leaflets.

Flowers radially symmetrical, rosy white, 1 mm in diameter, joined together in compact compound umbels opposite the leaves, with 2 or 3 very short rays, giving the flowers a look of glomeruli. Peduncle of umbel less than 1 cm. Corolla with 5 equal, free, indented petals. Calyx with 5 acute sepals. Involucre nondeveloped. Styles erect, very short, without hairs. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, ovoid achenes from 2 to 3,5 mm long, 2 mm across, with warts and straight thorns on only one side.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Torilis : nom donné à la plante par Michel Adanson (1727-1806);

        le sens est obscur, peut-être un diminutif de tordylium, un genre de

        la même famille.

    Nodosa : emprunt du latin nodosus, -a, -um (adj.)

        [ < nodus, -i  (nom) = le nœud ] = noueux.


    Torilis : name given to the plant by Michel Adanson (1727-1806);

        the meaning is obscure, perhaps a diminutive of tordylium, a genus

        of the same family.

    Nodosa : borrowed from Latin nodosus, -a, -um (adj)

        [ < nodus, -i  (noun) = knot ] = gnarled, knobby, nodose.
