Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges érigées, cylindriques, ramifiées.

Feuilles alternes, composées trifoliées, à long pétiole, à folioles obovales, dentées dans la moitié supérieure, glabres sur la face supérieure, presque glabres sur la face inférieure. Stipules dentées.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaune vif, de 6 à 9 mm de long, réunies en grappes denses de 2 à 3 cm de long, un peu plus longues que la feuille sous-jacente. Corolle papilionacée à étendard plus long que les ailes et que la carène. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, gousses sphériques, glabres, de 4 à 6 mm de diamètre, à face profondément ridée en réseau, ressemblant à une cervelle, pendantes, d’abord vertes puis jaunes ou brun gris à maturité.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, bright yellow, from 6 to 9 mm long, joined together in racemes from 2 to 3 cm long, a little longer than the underlying leaf. Corolla papilionaceous with the standard longer than the wings and than the keel. Ovary superior.

Fruits, spherical, glabrous pods, from 4 to 6 mm in diameter, with the face deeply wrinkled in network, resembling a brain, hanging, initially green than yellow or grey brown at maturity.

Melilotus : emprunt du grec ancien μελίλωτος, -ου (nom)

[ < μέλι, -ιτος (nom) = le miel + λωτός, -οῦ (nom) = le lotier ]

= le mélilot, nom donné à la plante par Dioscoride, médecin et

botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence à ses fleurs

mellifères semblables à celles du lotier.

Italicus : emprunt du latin italicus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < Italia, -ae (nom propre) = l’Italie ] = italien, d’Italie, qui vient d’Italie.

Melilotus : borrowed from Classical Greek μελίλωτος, -ου (noun)

[ < μέλι, -ιτος (noun) = honey + λωτός, -οῦ (noun) = bird’s-foot-trefoil ]

= melilot, name given to the plant by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and

botanist died in 90 AD, referring to its melliferous flowers similar to

those of the bird’s-foot-trefoil.
