Arbre hermaphrodite, à écorce sillonnée.

Feuilles alternes, composées bipennées, vert clair, de 90 cm de long au plus, caduques, à folioles de 30 à 50 mm de long, glabres, elliptiques à ovales, dentées ou lobées.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, lilas bleuâtre, de 15 à 18 mm de diamètre, odorantes, réunies en larges panicules qui naissent à l’aisselle des feuilles. Corolle à 5 (-6) pétales libres, étroits, d’environ 18 mm de long. Calice à 5 (-6) sépales soudés entre eux. 10 étamines à filets soudés ensemble en un long tube violet foncé. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, baies peu charnues, presque globuleuses, de 6 à 18 mm de diamètre, toxiques, d’abord vertes puis jaunâtres à maturité, demeurant sur l’arbre longtemps après la chute des feuilles.

Tree hermaphrodite, with a furrowed bark.

Leaves alternate, compound bipinnately, pale green, 90 cm long at most, deciduous, with leaflets from 30 to 50 mm long, glabrous, elliptic to ovate, toothed or lobed.

Flowers radially symmetrical, bluish lilac, from 15 to 18 mm in diameter, odorous, joined together in wide panicles growing at the axil of the leaves. Corolla with 5 (- 6) free, narrow petals, approximately 18 mm long. Calyx with 5 (- 6) sepals fused with each other. 10 stamens with filaments entirely fused in a long dark violet tube. Ovary superior.

Fruits, little fleshy, almost globose berries, from 6 to 18 mm in diameter, toxic, initially green then yellowish at maturity, remaining on the tree a long time after the fall of the leaves.

Étymologie / Etymology :

Melia : emprunt du grec ancien μελία, -ας (nom) = le frêne,

en référence à la ressemblance de ses feuilles avec celles du frêne.

Azedarach : emprunt du perse azaddhirakt = arbre libre, arbre qui

libère, nom vernaculaire de la plante, probablement donné par les

médecins arabes du Moyen Âge en référence à ses propriétés

médicinales.

Melia : borrowed from Classical Greek μελία, -ας (noun) = ash,

referring to the resemblance of its leaves to those of the ash.

Azedarach : borrowed from Persian azaddhirakt = free tree, tree which

releases, common name of the plant, probably given by Arab doctors

of the Middle Ages referring to its medicinal properties.
