Arbrisseau hermaphrodite, gris argenté, perdant ses feuilles pendant l’été, à feuillage dense, à jeunes tiges vertes à soies blanches.

Feuilles alternes, composées trifoliées, pétiolées, à folioles obovales, rétrécies à la base, parfois dentées au sommet et souvent repliées. Stipules lancéolées et entières, soudées au pétiole par leur base.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaune orangé, de 12 à 15 mm de long, réunies par 4 à 8 en grappes terminales portées par un pédoncule plus long que la feuille sous-jacente ou l’égalant. Corolle papilionacée. 9 étamines soudées entre elles et 1 libre. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, gousses minces, de 10 à 15 mm de diamètre, enroulées sur 1 spire dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre, avec un trou central, glabres, sans épines, nettement nervurées.

Shrub hermaphrodite, silver-coloured grey, losing its leaves in summer, with a dense foliage. Youthful stems green with white bristles.

Leaves alternate, compound trifoliate, petiolate, with obovate leaflets, narrowed at the base, sometimes toothed at the top and often folded up. Stipules lanceolate and entire, fused with the petiole by their base.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, orange yellow, from 12 to 15 mm long, joined together by 4 to 8 in stalked terminal racemes carried by a peduncle longer than the underlying leaf or equal to it. Corolla papilionaceous. 9 stamens fused with each other and 1 free. Ovary superior.

Fruits, thin pods, from 10 to 15 mm in diameter, coiled clockwise on 1 whorl, with a central hole, glabrous, without thorns, definitely ribbed.

Medicago : emprunt du grec ancien μηδικός, -ή, -όν (adj.) = de Médie

(région de Perse), en référence au texte de Théophraste,

philosophe péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste,

mort vers 288 av. J.-C., qui croyait que la plante était originaire

de Perse.

Arborea : emprunt du latin arboreus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < arbor, -oris (nom) = l’arbre ] = qui a la forme ou l’aspect d’un arbre.

Medicago : borrowed from Classical Greek μηδικός, -ή, -όν (adj)

= from Media (region of Persia), referring to the text of Theophrastus,

peripatetic philosopher, disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist,

died towards 288 BC, who believed that the plant was native to Persia.

Arborea : borrowed from Latin arboreus, -a, -um (adj)

[ < arbor, -oris (noun) = tree ] = which has the shape or the

appearance of a tree.
